In our busy society, many of us wake up and complain about not getting enough sleep or feel exhausted shortly after getting out of bed. It’s easy to jump to the conclusion that we have insomnia but in most cases sleep deprivation is caused by inadequate conditions in your bedroom. The atmosphere in your bedroom may be keeping you awake or preventing you from getting quality sleep. Studies show that a lack of sleep can lead to feeling sluggish the day after, it can weaken the immune system, impede overall health, cause weight gain, and even contribute to a shorter life span. Making a few minor changes to your bedroom environment can help improve your chances of getting a long night’s sleep. Below you will find some ways to change the conditions in your bedroom to help you achieve a solid night’s sleep.

Placing your bed in the perfect spot can also help you get a good night’s sleep. Most people find that placing the bed against a solid wall facing away from windows and doors makes them feel the most comfortable. Eliminating extra light in your room will also improve your sleep pattern. Having too much light in your bedroom will prevent your body from producing the natural melatonin that makes you feel tired. Minimizing light from street lights, electronics, and other household lights is a sure way to help you sleep better.

A clean bedroom, especially the floor and corners, can make for a more harmonious living environment. Removing clutter can also give you some peace of mind which may help your mind be more relaxed while you’re asleep. Putting clothes away, picking up things left on the floor, and creating some organization in your bedroom are sure ways to increase the tranquil atmosphere in your room. Another great way to help your sleep pattern is by making your room smell good and clean. Wash your linens regularly to keep that fresh feeling that will help you fall asleep faster.

Avoid housing electronics in your bedroom. Studies show that the blue light in tv’s, laptops, and smartphones affect the level melatonin more than any other wavelength. Watching television or working on your laptop in bed also creates a distraction for your brain so it doesn’t start to slow down and prepare for sleep.

Achieving a night of satisfactory sleep is easy if you simply get the right amount of sleep, leave your room at a favorable temperature, avoid too much light, create a relaxing atmosphere, and bypass the distractions when lying in bed.
