Making your condo pet-proof should be one of the highest priorities of every renter. Even before you bring your pet to your condo, you need to check every room for any possible areas or items that can be damaged by your pet. Replace open trash bins with closed ones and hide extra cord length behind the sofa or cabinet. These helpful tips can also help keep your pet safe from harm, and it could save you a lot of money from needing to replace damaged furniture, carpets, and other home gadgets.

If you’ve ever owned a dog or a cat, you’re probably familiar with how cute they can be. Of course, playfulness can sometimes create damage in your home. Leaving pets alone unattended, especially in your condo unit, can cause you the need to spend endless time cleaning, in every corner of your home.

If you live in a condo and own cats, you will find yourself needing to clean their litter regularly, so they do not try to find somewhere else to use the bathroom , thus causing damage to your condo. You need to also have a scratching post available to them, or a piece of furniture that isn’t prone to scuffing. Remember, cats can do a lot of damage when they start scratching furniture, cabinets, doors and trim work, and you need to take special care to prevent long-term damage.

Pet owners living in a condo often set aside an area for their furry companions. Mini outdoor areas like the porch, garage, and laundry room often serve as part-time spaces for your pets while their owners are out-of-house. Those living in small apartments, though, can have a tough time cleaning up after their pets. If you let your pet run around the place, make sure to safeguard every nook and cranny. Here are some tips on how to help prevent your pets from damaging your condo.

Get Them a bathroom

One of the big problems pet owners have, is maintaining the litter box or area set up for their pet to use the bathroom. For some pets, it can be quite easy to train, but other pets have a hard time getting it right. Setting aside the right bathroom area in the condo for pets is half the battle. Be sure to choose a quiet corner, that is easy for them to access. As you are potty training your pet, be sure to watch for signs that they are ready to go, and then lead them to their area every time, as quickly as possible. This training may take a little longer than you think, but if you continue putting in the effort, your pet will eventually absorb this new habit.

Dispose of Hazardous Materials

Make sure to dispose of all hazardous materials, or if you intend to keep it for some use, be sure these hazards are well out of the way, and even locked up, if possible. Avoid storing these hazardous materials in low cabinets and on open shelves. To make your home even safer, place locks on cabinets to prevent pets from opening them by accident. Avoid leaving empty chemical containers lying around and definitely don’t use them to store pet food. Not only can the box contain harmful residue, but your dog or cat might mistake them for edibles. As a double measure, keep all toxic potted decor and live poisonous plants out of reach.

Fence Off Prohibited Areas

If your home is short on doors and dividers, prevent your pet from entering into other rooms of the house by installing pet gates. You can find a lot of options at your local pet store, big box store, or on Amazon. These fences are easy to assemble and install, and some also have built-in doors that open and close, to make passage throughout your home easier. Most of these pet fences and gates can be easily stored away, should you prefer not to use them once your pet is trained.

Control Your Cords and Gadgets

Pets love cords of all kinds, and since it’s almost impossible to go completely wireless, you need to address this. Tangled cords can easily catch a cat's attention since they look like a lot of fun to play with. Don’t bundle up your cords, and be sure to keep cords out of the way. Use cord organizers, and cover or hide exposed wiring as soon as possible. If you have to charge a phone or other gadget, keep it up and out of reach.

To keep your pet from damaging your condo, and to keep your pet safe, your full-time effort is required. Taking the time to thoroughly pet-proof the entire space will make your life easier.
