Many tenants today want to deodorize their apartments with over-the-counter air fresheners. One of the first things many apartment renters do to combat odors is to buy plug-in air fresheners or scented candles that mask the unpleasant smell. But these products only mask the bad smell and don’t usually last long. If you want to make your home look appealing and smell fresh, here are some of the natural ways to deodorize your apartment.
Coffee grounds
Coffee grounds are an excellent deodorizer for your fridge. It’s one of the natural ways to get rid of the smell of spoiled food that resulted from a freezer failure. Just fill a cup of unused coffee grounds and place them in the freezer overnight. The coffee grounds will absorb the odor. If you like the flavored-coffee scent, add a couple of drops of vanilla to the grounds.
Cotton balls
When you saturate a cotton ball with your favorite fragrances, it can be an excellent deodorizer for your home. You can use cologne and essential oils such as lavender, lemon juice, or vanilla extract. You can place cotton balls in your vacuum cleaner to have the pleasant scent spread throughout the room while you clean. You can also set a wet cotton ball with any scent you like on a shelf in your fridge to act as a deodorizer.
Lemons
Lemons are great for home use to help deodorize many surfaces. If your garbage bin is getting an unpleasant smell, place lemon peels down it to get rid of the foul odor. If you want your kitchen area to smell like fresh lemon and not just the countertops, cut a lemon in half and place it in a bowl of water and let them sit.
Fire is a great source to emit a fresh smell of lemon if you throw some lemon peels directly into the flames. If you are using wood-burning stove, place an enameled cast-iron pot or bowl on top, fill it with water, and add lemon, or orange peels, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and apple skins. If you have no wood-burning stove, you can use your stovetop instead and simmer the water periodically.
Oranges
Oranges can also be used like what the lemons are used to deodorize your home. They can also be made into pomanders. For centuries, pomanders have been used to fill small spaces with a pleasant fragrance as well as to combat moths. These are also incredibly easy to make. Take a bunch of cloves and place them in a pomander and suspend it using a piece of string, twine, or monofilament fishing line inside a closet or cupboard, and it will keep the space smelling fresh for years.
Salt
Most garbage bins are a source of unpleasant odor. You can get rid of that foul smell by adding salt in it. When cleaning garbage disposal, dump in ½ cup of salt, run the cold water, and start the disposal. The salt will remove stuck waste and neutralize odors.
Spices
There is nothing more welcoming than the smell of something good cooking. Instead of using commercial air fresheners, use a handful of whole cloves or a cinnamon stick in a pot of water and simmer it on the stove for half an hour. You can also place a teaspoon of the ground spices on a cookie sheet and put it in a 200°F (93°C) oven with the door open for 30 minutes. Either way, your entire house will naturally smell spicy good.
Vanilla extract
Using vanilla extra is a great way to eliminate lingering smell in your home, refrigerator, and microwave. Just wipe the inside of the fridge with vanilla extract. To prolong the scent of vanilla, soak a cotton ball or a piece of sponge with vanilla extract and leave it in the refrigerator. If the odor of fish or other strong smell is lingering in your microwave, pour it with a little vanilla extract in a bowl in a microwave and run, and the smell is gone.
If you don’t like the smell of fresh paint in your house, mix one tablespoon vanilla extract into the paint can when you open it. Your home will smell delicious. If you put a drop or two of vanilla extract on a light bulb, and when it’s on, your house will be filled with the appealing scent of baked goods in the oven.
Vinegar
If you’ve recently burned a steak – you’ll get a lingering smoky odor. Don’ worry this unpleasant smell can easily be removed by placing a shallow bowl about three-quarters full of white or cider vinegar in the room where the scent is strongest. Try using several bowls if the smell permeates your entire house. The odor should be gone within the day. You can also dispense the smell of fresh cigarette smoke inside a room by moistening a cloth with vinegar and waving it around a bit.
Eucalyptus
The oil extract from eucalyptus plants is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Therefore, it’s great to use it in places that are closed off and tend to get musty. Place a few branches in closets and other musty areas in your home so it will deodorize the air.
Baking Soda
Baking soda can be used for many cleaning purposes around the house, and it can also be used as an effective odor absorber and deodorizer. That’s why baking soda is the ideal ingredient for a healthy, eco-friendly, budget-friendly air freshener. Whether you need a spray air freshener for the entire house, a tabletop air freshener for a specific room, or an air freshener for a carpet with an unpleasant smell, baking soda is all you need. All you need is to mix it with the right ingredients to maximize its benefits.
The secret to deodorizing your apartment is to get rid first of the source of the odor, which you can do with a thorough cleaning. After that, you can choose your favorite deodorizers to make everything smell great again.
